Rotarians may give another person recognition points , which are accumulated when Paul Harris Fellows make personal contributions in addition to their initial gift of $1,000. As donors increase their recognition levels through new gifts, they accrue points, which don't expire and can be transferred to other donors' accounts. If 1,000 points are transferred to one person, that individual becomes a Paul Harris Fellow

Beer Garden Coordinator - a volunteer is needed at Dragon Boat; contact President Rob.

Club Assembly

President Rob - need a president elect nominee for the coming year

Treasurer Jim - the grant from Gaming Branch was $15k instead of $20k this year because year-end cash balance was too high after member dues were collected early.  The deficit on meal costs is about $2,000 due to low attendance and number of guests.

International Service - Doug  said the Ghana medical equipment project is proceeding with support from the Mid Island Group of clubs and $31,000 from the Canadian Government (GOC has made $1.2M available annually for Cdn clubs to apply for TRF global grants).  Now looking at a project with the Hospital Foundation through a community grant.

Public Relations - Don is working with the Public Information group among our local 5 clubs.

Membership - Larry is working on a new member forms manual.

Community Service - Ed Poli was absent.  The Audit by the BC Gaming Policy & Enforcement Branch is going well.  Our community breakfast program might be eligible for gaming funds.

Club Administration - Jeff said the club had received good service from Nanaimo Golf Club.

Foundation - Perry was absent.  This year members have donated $3,700 to TRF, $107 per capita.  $800 was donated to polio plus.  Members are reminded that you can set up automatic contributions monthly, quarterly or annually.

Rotary Foundation Centennial Celebration April 1
On Saturday April 1st the 5 Nanaimo and Lantzville Rotary Clubs hosted a successful celebration of the Rotary Foundation's Centennial at Beban Auditorium. The event was attended by members and partners from each club, as well as scores of prominent community members. The organizing committee, headed by our very own Derek Rickwood did a fine job in putting together an informative and positive program featuring greetings from Snuneymuxw First Nation and Nanaimo mayor Bill Mackay, information on Rotary's youth programs, and, of course, The Rotary Foundation.
Ten Paul Harris Fellow Awards were presented to some exceptional community members. Our club's awards went to Deborah Marshall - Principal of John Barsby Community School - and to Rob Anderson - Director of Community Ministries at Salvation Army. We partner with the school at several events a year, and with Salvation Army's New Hope Centre monthly when we put on our community breakfast. Congratulations to Derek and his committee, and to Deb and Rob - our award recipients!

We’re so close to eradicating polio. Here’s why we need $1.5 billion more to finish the job.

When was polio last in Europe? If you guessed 2002, the year the region was certified polio-free, you’re wrong.
The last time polio affected a child in Europe was 2015. Two Ukrainian children were diagnosed with paralytic polio, and that likely means that many more were infected and didn’t show symptoms. At least one Western news outlet deemed the outbreak “crazy” — but the reality is that no place on Earth is safe from polio until the disease is eradicated everywhere.

Ukraine had fully vaccinated only 50 percent of its children against polio, and low immunization rates are a recipe for an outbreak. In this case, a rare mutation in the weakened strain used in the oral polio vaccine was able to spread because so many children had not been vaccinated. To stop it from progressing, the country needed to administer 6 million vaccines through an emergency program.
