Rotary Minute from Colin:
The Object of Rotary comes from the Constitution of Rotary.  The number of items have changed through the years. The last major change came 1951.

Object of Rotary
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
  • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Notable Rotarians - Sir Edmond Hillary from New Zealand and Johann Kruger from the Rotary Club of Nanaimo

Announcements:
  • Sue received a letter from Loaves and Fishes  Since Jan of this year they have processed 830,000 pounds of food work $2,146,000.00.  Amazing work!
  • Glynis reported on Pub night.  A good time was had by all those who attended.  The executive may be asked to consider doing this more frequently
  • Paul spoke about youth exchange.  The program was suspended for much of the world in 2021.  The participation in the program was not prohibited but it is not easy to meet all the rules.  We will optimistically plan for next year and all three students that would have gone this year are willing to go next year depending on our finances.  About $3200 would be needed for us to participate next year according to the formula used to distribute the cost amongst the Nanaimo clubs.
  • Bob spoke about fund raising.  We have been looking a Able Auctions and they are temporarily without a location.  Hopefully they will be back in business in October.  We are also thinking of a golf ball drop in the Spring (February perhaps?) and the cost would be $5 per ticket. Bill McKinney is looking into popcorn sales at the ball games.

Points to Ponder:
   I bought a new pair of shoes with memory foam insoles.  No more forgetting why I walked into the kitchen.

Program:
    The guest speaker tonight was Kim Smythe who is the President and CEO of Chamber of Commerce.  His topic was the revamped downtown business association.

  Kim Smythe

Some time ago, the Chamber decided to help out with the downtown business association that had somewhat disappeared from operation.  The Commercial Street Night Market was one of the ideas that came about and we have all seen the success that it has become.  This really helped out some of the existing business owners but also several new businesses opened.
This new association is not directly connected to the city but it exists with their blessing.
Sadly, with Covid, the activities have been cancelled for this winter season including the winter parade.
The future plans are for the Chamber to leave the active participation to the new association as it becomes more mature.

John thanked the Speaker for a very interesting and informative presentation.
