Larry inducted a new member at the meeting.  Fred von Schellwitz was proposed by Derek after meeting Fred and finding out that he has been a Rotarian for 55 years and had recently moved to Nanaimo.  Fred began his Rotary journey in 1967 with the Medicine Hat Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Calgary South in 1970, the Rotary Club of Campbell River in 1972, and then the Rotary Club of Vernon in 2010, before moving to Nanaimo this year.  During his 38 years in Campbell River, he built and operated the Austrian Chalet Village and Freddies Pup, which later became the Best Western Hotel and is now the
Ramada Inn. He sold the hotel in 1994.
Welcome Fred!

Announcements:
  • Rob let us know that the January breakfast will be on the 14th and he will be looking for volunteers shortly
  • Larry reported that the last Loaves and Fishes went well
  • Derek let us know that the Clippers night will be on January 17th and he will be sending out an email with details.  This sounds like good fun and a chance to get some Rotary info out to a crowd we might not normally reach.
  • We received an invitation to the Air Cadet open house. The 808 Wing invites us to an Information Event at the Wing building on the Military Base, on Sunday, January 22, 2023, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.  You will have the opportunity to experience the Flight Simulator, which is one of the training tools for the Air Cadets.  There will be a presentation from Cadet graduates regarding the program and how it has benefited them. There will be an open Bar and appetizers will be provided.  Air Cadets is a Canadian national youth program for persons aged 12 to 18. One in five private pilots in Canada is an ex-Air Cadet and 67% of commercial and airline pilots began as air cadets. There are currently 83 Cadets in the program here in Nanaimo.
  • The recent five club presidents meeting recommended that the clubs support the Nanaimo 7 Potatoes organization's project to plant 100 Cherry Blossom trees around town.  The City will plant and maintain the trees and they already have 16 planted.  Our club's contribution was $350. P.S. Ed let us know that Nanaimo is (or sounds like) 7 Potatoes in Japanese. Welcome to 7 Potatoes - 7 Potatoes (sevenpotatoes.com)

Comedy Corner:
When I went to get my driver’s licence renewed, our local motor-vehicle bureau was packed. The line inched along, and after nearly an hour, the man ahead of me finally got his licence. He inspected his photo and commented to the clerk, “I was waiting so long, I ended up looking pretty grouchy in this picture.”

The employee looked at the picture closely. “It’s okay,” he replied. “That’s how you’ll look if the cops pull you over, anyway.”

Program:

Our scheduled program with the exchange and RYLA students was cancelled due to ill health.  It will be rescheduled for later.

We had an informational Rotary Polio video in it's place and Rob led us through the Christmas Quiz in it's place.  Thanks Rob - always fun!
