Tonight's meeting was held at Longwood Brew Pub and hosted by President Elect Rob Waine.

Guests

Our students Daniel and Saeko attended their last meeting at our club as they are headed home shortly.

News and Updates

At tonights meeting Rob was asking for feedback on The Community Breakfast.  Was there enough people helping out thru the peak times?
If you have any thoughts on this please forward them to Rob!  Thanks.

Reminder that we are at Loaves and Fishes next week and this does start at 6!  Please attend if you are available.

District Conference is this weekend in Olympia and our members Paul Geneau and Derek Rickwood are attending.  Hopefully they will share some highlights at one of our meetings.

Saeko presented our club with a Banner from her club and Pres Rob presented her with a Banner to take back to her Club.

This was Daniel and Saeko's last meeting with us and they shared that they have both really loved their year and have great memories to take home with them.  They were very grateful that Rotary offered this wonderful opportunity to them and hoped this program will continue.  Having them at the meetings this year certainly added a lot of enjoyment.  They are both wonderful ambassadors for their Clubs and we will certainly miss them.

Jim mentioned that Bill Robinson won't be doing the 50/50 Draw organizing for the Dragon Boat Festival, so unless someone else volunteers it won't be happening.  The person that takes out the license is required to be there most of the time and also at draw time.  If you are interested please let Jim know. These funds are under the restricted funds guidelines, so the monies can only be used for specific donations.

Jim also spoke of the Gaming funds and the $20,000 grant that we received and must be spent.  He is reviewing a few organizations that we have donated to in the past, such as Mental Health, the Food Share Lunch Program, Boys and Girls Summer Camp and Big Brothers and Sisters Mentoring Program.  Thru the evening discussion he will also look at the Kids Symphony  and the Equestrian Disability's Programs.  These are all great community programs so we will wait for the final decision.

We received an email from the Child Development Centre that there is an Annual Meeting that they would love people to attend. Its June 29th and runs from 5-7, although if you are not a member already, please arrive at 4:30 to register.

Tonights Program

Pres Elect Rob reviewed the Club Vision Summary.  Which was interesting to see where we were in the process for achieving preset goals. We reviewed, Club Characteristics, Club Size and Attributes , Club Service, Vocational Service, New Generation Service , Community Service, International Service Foundation, and Public Relations.  The members enjoyed some great discussions with regard to such items as in the next 3-5 years, what size we would like to see the membership grow.  We heard information around a new Ryla event coming to Vancouver Island.  Doug updated us on our very successful Ghana Project and our partnership with DayBreak Club on this. We also had discussions other projects locally such as the Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Beban Park.  Looks and sounds like we are going to have a wonderful Rotary Year!!!

We also had the Inventory of Interests to complete .  What Topics interest you? Don't forget to fill it out and return to Rob!

Birthdays / Anniversaries

Ian Thompson was last week!  We have Suzanne's this week and Greg's on July 2nd. Wishing all three of you a Very Happy Birthday.

See you next Tuesday at Loaves and Fishes at 6!!!!

Disaster Aid International Ecuador Appeal

Editor: Katherine Carver Disaster Aid UK/Ireland

The earthquake that hit Ecuador on 16 April resulted in 660 deaths and injured approximately 4,600 people. The most severe damage was concentrated in the North west; in Manabí Province and the canton of Muisne in neighboring Esmeraldas Province. Ecuador has appealed to the international community for help for the estimated 720,000 people in need of humanitarian assistance; 72,000 of whom have been displaced.

First response aid has been provided and is still being provided. However, many of the displaced are in emergency camps and many of these are reported to be of very low standard. Unicef have identified an urgent need to facilitate the relocation of those displaced back to the vicinity of their original communities so that they can start to rebuild their original homes. Those familiar with International Disaster Aid will know that this is just the type of work we specialise in.

Accordingly, Steve Lister and Craig Roberts, both from the UK, have been sent by Disaster Aid International to undertake the assessment visit. They arrived on 6 June with the objective of understanding the socio-political environment, developing partnerships on the ground, identifying communities that can be supported effectively, identifying the precise requirements for those communities and then drawing up a delivery plan that is acceptable to all the relevant stakeholders.

Latest project at St. Hubert's School in Ghana is complete
Doug Pearson announced at our June 21st meeting  that the final report detailing completion of the project at St. Hubert’s basic school has been accepted by the District 5020 Foundation Committee.  Foundation Chair, Bill McCarthy wrote: “congratulations! You have made education safer through the provision of the basics; water, electricity, etc. for students at St. Hubert’s. Your partnerships and “boots on the ground” mad this possible. Further, the Mid Island Group enabled this project to be adequately funded.”

Our club partnered with Nanaimo Daybreak Rotary Club to develop a grant proposal for the project. The district community grant in the amount of US$3,255 was matched by contributions from the Mid Island Group, area clubs and the Techiman Rotary Club.  The grant funded construction of a well and installation of electricity for the St. Hubert's basic school in Akrofrom, a community about 70 km NE of Sunyani.
The school was chosen because the community is expanding very quickly increasing the school population of about 1000.   However, the school lacked basic facilities like water and electricity. We therefore decided to use this grant to provide these basic facilities, to help improve their way of life thereby improving education and literacy.
The contact at the Techiman Club was Prince Tandoh. Prince visited us with the delegation of Ghanaian Rotarians in 2014 as President of the newly chartered club.
