Meeting: January 21st. 2025
Announcements:
Fund raising report from Jim. The fund raising committee is organizing both a garage sale and a beer and burger. Both will happen before the end of our Rotary year June 30. We are working of securing locations for both events. Jim is waiting to hear back from Deb Melenchukregarding availability in March for a beer and burger. Bob Lasota has been in touch with the Lantzville Legion as a location in case the Lantzville Pub is not available. If neither is available we may move the garage sale to March and do the Beer and Burger in June. We are looking for a suitable vacant commercial site to hold the garage sale but if none is available we will set up a smaller version of the garage sale trail. For easier logistics we will limit the trail locations to 2 or 3 members’ homes. Once firm commitments have happened Jim will communicate the details to all club members.
Moin and Don asked the club members to help.
The NEED never ends and hundreds of people in our community are in dire need of both food and clothing. Moin Edraki has taken up the challenge and as he says.... "the need isn't just at Christmas and Thanksgiving - it's all the time".
If you have anything that could help in the way of food or clothing - connect with Moin and he'll arrange for a pick-up. Good deeds never end - they just spawn new ones.
Share this poster with your friends and ..... fill those needs!

Larry advised that:
Our next date for volunteering at Loaves and Fishes is January 28th., 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Thank you to those who have registered.
If you have not done this before ask Larry about how to register.
Derek played a video of Bob Hargreaves playing the piano and sadly announced that Bob has terminal cancer. Our thoughts are with him and Cathy.
Program:
Matthew Dickson zoomed in to give a talk about MIND AID, a non profit which seeks to help people in developing countries get access to basic mental health care. Matthew himself suffered from schizophrenia and talked about his own journey. We heard about the definition of Schizophrenia, the key signs/affectations, and the Avatar therapy and the Judo therapy. For more info check out: mindaid.ca. Don has some ideas on how Rotary might help with Fundraising.
Member profile.
This is a new addition to the Bulletin and will feature a different member each edition. To start we introduce Larry Rumming.
I was born in Nanaimo and first lived on Pryde Avenue in Quarterway with my parents and older brother. When I was five, we moved to Park Avenue in Five Acres area of Harewood. I attended South Ward School (later called Bayview) the second year after it opened. For pocket money a friend and I trapped muskrats and collected Cascara bark.
I attended John Shaw High School for three weeks in 1956 and then my parents moved to Chemainus where I attended Chemainus High School. I worked part-time for Ford Ceramics mixing ‘slip’ and pouring moulds from age 12 – 18. I also worked for Overwaitea stocking shelves, sold homemade crafts, and delivered papers.
As soon as school ended, I moved to Victoria to be trained as a cartographic draftsman with the provincial government, first with Water Resources then Forest Surveys. In 1965 I moved to Vancouver to work for MacMillan Bloedel to work in theirmapping department. In 1969 I transferred to Nanaimo to set up and manage a mapping department.
I met and married Alfonsa in 1970. In 1973 became Manager of Administration, including employee Relations. In 1975 our daughter Nyla was born. When the recession hit in 1982, I was let go and formed Creative Interiors Limited, doing custom woodwork, painting and decorating.
This lasted until 1984, when Macmillan Bloedel asked me to return to do mapping. I joined the Rotary Club of Nanaimo North in 1985. I ran the cartographer mapping department until 1992, when I became employee relations administrator, then in 1998, Human Resources Coordinator until the Spring of 2000, when I was pensioned off.
I formed Crossroads HR Consulting in 2000. In 2002 began working in employment consulting with those with multiple barriers to employment. I was involved in employment consulting for 12 years. In 2011 I formed Laurence Rumming Assessments doing corporate training and development and small business startups. I finally retired in 2023 …. I think!
Woodwork, renovations, writing, community, Rotary, and gardening are my interests. We enjoy time at our trailer in Qualicum Bay during the summer months.
