 FEBRUARY 4th MEETING CANCELLED!

However, your editor thought you should have a Bulletin.

Firstly, from January 21st. I forgot to post the picture of President Bill receiving another Paul Harris award.

Well done Bill!

The next Family Dinner dinner is at Bayview School on February 11th. If you haven’t done so already contact Cara.

ROTARACT
have a fundraiser coming up on February 10th in the upper cafeteria of the VIU from 10 am to 2 pm. They will be selling baked food and could use our help to supply them baked food or volunteer with them. Derek will be helping them some baked food and at the fundraiser.

Here's a copy of the email message today from the Rotaract President, Olivia Wilde:
Hello everyone! I want to let you all know that we were able to book the Cafeteria for a bake sale on February 10th!
If anyone has some baked goods they would like to donate we would greatly appreciated.

And lastly, from Rod on February 6th.
I received sad news this morning. Bob Hargreaves has passed away from cancer. He had been in an induced coma under palliative care for over a week. He was an amazing man and will be very missed from our meetings. We have not heard of any arrangements yet, but will keep you informed.

Our thoughts and sympathy to Cathy.

MEMBER PROFILE - Jim Turley
I was born in Nanaimo on April 7, 1948.  I attended Pauline Haarer Elementary, Quesnell School, John Barsby Junior High School, and graduated from NDSS in 1966.  I was a marginal student at best but decided to take Grade 13 and that was when my desire to learn kicked in.  I was accepted to UBC where I attained a BSC[AGR] in 1971.  While there I met Marianne Taube.  We both served positions on the Aggie Student Council and became good friends.  In 1973 I was able to convince her to marry me.  Between the fall of 1971 and November of 1973 I was the assistant manager of a large cranberry and blueberry farm in Richmond.   When the cranberry harvest was finished in mid November I moved to Tomslake where Marianne’s parentsowned a dairy farm.  We ran it for them until April of 1975 when we moved to Nanaimo to work with my parents at Turley’s Florist.  Our son Kevin was born in Dawson Creek in April of 1975 and our twin daughters, Maureen and Stefanie, in Nanaimo in March of 1977. We were blessed with 6 grandchildren ranging in ages 10 to 25.

In 1992 my parents retired and Marianne and I owned and operated the flower shop until 2018 when we sold it to Bill Grace.  During the economic downturn of 1981/82 our gross sales dropped by 40% compared to the same 6 month time period.  We survived by becoming more innovative in our marketing and our community involvement increased.  I had joined the Downtown Nanaimo Rotary club in the fall of 1975, then switched to the North Club in the spring of 1976.  Our community involvement went beyond Rotary.  Marianne’s involvement included our kids’ school parent committees, Nanaimo Business Women, VIS, and Navy League.  I contributed volunteer time to groups such as the United Way, Nanaimo Minor Lacrosse, the YES Committee and the Downtown Nanaimo Business Association.  Marianne also served several years on the Provincial FTD Board.  I served on the Northwest Florist Board and the Flowers Canada provincial and National boards.  One of our highlights was being on the volunteer florist committee that did the floral decorations for the Commonwealth Games in Victoria in I believe 1994.  There were lots of stories I could share about that adventure.

Marianne passed away in January of 2021.  I have been blessed with meeting another wonderful lady.  Vicki and I were married in October of 2023.
