Beer & Burger  Jan 26th

Please send Lee an email with the description and value of your item that you are donating.  You can either bring the item the night of
the Beer & Burger or drop off at Jim's or Lee's.  Jim mention that he needs a few members to help out that evening, so please let
him know if you are available!  Also there is about 33 tickets sold so please sell more.  The more the merrier and we raise more money!

Venue Opportunities

Thanks to Barb and Audrey for all their dedication to this!  Change is as good as a rest and Kiwanis has decided that it is not cost effective to
have us.  We would be very welcome to hold special events there as long there is 30 or more.  So we do need to empty the storage cupboard
there by the end of March.  So starting after the Beer and Burger we are at the Longwood for the 1st and 3rd tuesday of every month. Although
when the Longwood has an event we could get bumped.
Ed will work on "meeting in a bag" so that all the flags etc are mobile. Also at this time part of the cost for members of every meal goes to
the club and when we go to the Longwood this won't happen so we will find out from Jim the implications of this.

United Way Community Project

Larry shared with us for the Feb 9th meeting we will be helping at the "Point in Time" count where they survey the homeless. We would
be giving out food and packages of goods to hose who are participating. This is taking place at the Franklin Street Gym in the late afternoon
and early evening. Please let Larry know by Friday noon, Jan 22nd  if you and spouse or friends can assist. This would also be a great time to
promote our breakfast.

President Lee suggested that is best to check the Rotary Calendar to ensure the club is not already committed with another event, as it
seems like there is lots going on that members can assist with.  Just to make sure we don't overwhelm ourselves, although we do love to
be in the community!!!

Paul Harris Celebration

Don is organizing this amazing event for Feb 23rd at Lucky's Liquor Store!  We are inviting all the Nanaimo Clubs and
the venue holds 72 people, so get your tickets early. There will be a Wine Tasting along with Cheese and Bread.  Don mentioned
that Lucky's has been great to work with as they are going to eat the tax and no charge for the room.  Price of tickets is yet
to be determined.

50/50 Tickets are ready!

Ed has supplied most members with their tickets to sell and we do have numerous opportunities to sell at Walmart and Country Grocer.  Lets
get them sold early this year!  Ed has set a little higher goal for sales to $15,000 an I am sure we can hit it.  He will be sending out the opportunity so sign up quickly for Sunday Jan 31st!

If you need a Rotary Hat there are a few available for $20!

Vocational Month  Jeff Tomlinson

Jeff shared his life with us and started off by using a dating site to get some inspiration for his talk. It did have some interesting questions!
He had a great slide show that went along with it, and this is a tidbit of some of the wonderful things he shared.

Born in Ottawa and grew up on the Saanich Peninsula which sounded wonderful with a love for fishing, baseball, rugby and  bike riding as a kid and he was an honour roll student. Although he did mention that on occasion the school asked him to stay home. When he was young he worked at Butchart Gardens with his friends and got the perma grin. His dad was an accountant and Jeff thought thats what he would do too. But after a year of working towards that he went to LA to his Uncle Louie's house. Came back and headed to Calgary where he worked in Security and met Robin, in which he says he had never met anyone like her!.Married at 22 and joined J.Anderson in 1993.  They decided to get an exchange student for a year and as luck would have it also had a new baby that year. But Jeff says it was the best year ever!  Although Jeff is still part of J.E. Anderson he did take an amazing year and worked for Diavik Diamond mines in the tundra and told awesome stories of the Elk migrating, and how the bulls protect the rest of the herd.  Very cool. Jeff has definitely enjoyed his amazing journey so far and he really does have the best Farmer Jokes.  Thanks Jeff for sharing your Baby Talk with us!

Also sharing pictures of the January Breakfast!

Next week is the Beer & Burger at the White Spot!

In a majority of countries, more women than men work without pay in family-run businesses: World Bank
The World Bank Group has just launched a new gender data portal that brings together sex-disaggregated and gender-relevant data on topics ranging from education, demographics, and health to jobs, asset ownership, and political participation. We’ve also just released the Little Data Book on Gender 2016 along with online tables that are linked to the latest data available in the World Development Indicators.

Gender data are one of the most visited parts of our data site, and these new resources make it easier than ever to see our data’s gender dimensions. The country and topic dashboards give an overview of the distribution and trends in data across important themes, and the online tables and book are a useful reference for the most commonly accessed data.

Below I’ve picked a few charts from the new portal related to the four pillars of the Bank Group’s new gender equality strategy. These aims focus on improving human endowments, through better access to health, education, and social protection; opening up more and better jobs by tackling issues such as skills gaps and care arrangements; expanding women’s access to and control over assets;  and enhancing women’s voice and agency, meaning their ability to make themselves heard and exert control over key aspects of their own lives.
