April 22, 2014 Meeting

April 22, 2014 – EARTH DAY

My apologies, I was not able to do the newsletter last week.  I need to give the club an apology buck for that.  I want to thank Craig for stepping in for me while I was on vacation – thank you so much Craig, you did a great job.

Business now:  we will be voting on the following donations over the next few weeks.  These have all been approved by the Executive Committee and now need to be approved by the club.

1. $500 in Gaming funds to the Vancouver Island Crisis Society as a contribution towards a total program cost of $25,000 for youth suicide prevention program.

2. $500 in Gaming funds to the Nanaimo Brain Injury Society for the Safety Fair to be held in May. Focus is to advise families on how to children safe.  Demos on bike helmets, concussion, kids help line, internet safety, fire safety and the RCMP child fingerprint program (total project budget is $2,053)

3. $1,000 in Gaming funds to the Coast Salish Employment and Training Society to fund the production of Hul’iqumil’num language booklets

4. $5000 in Gaming funds to the Nanaimo Food Share Society for the Summer Lunch Munch Program

5.$5,000 in Gaming funds to Nanaimo Big Brothers/Big Sisters for the in-school mentoring program

6. $5,000 in Gaming funds to the Nanaimo 7-10 Club for the purchase of a new stove and an additional hot water heater.

Our fearless Leader, President Jeff was away this week so our President Elect Greg stepped in, abet without an agenda so he just winged it.  Did you know that Greg and Kim will be getting married four days after his installation and, on my birthday!  They chose the longest day of the year for their wedding.

Craig provided us with a brief history of Earth Day.

Barry Sparks, is taking on another role with the BC Games which are being held from July 17 to 20th.  Barry made a plea for volunteers and, if you want to register go to www.bcgames.org.  They need volunteers in almost every category you can image from drivers to sandwich makers.

Many at our club remember Susan and Ron Mielke as very involved members of our club.  Susan is the incoming president of the Qualicum Beach Club.  Paul introduce both Susan and Audrey from the Qualicum Beach Club.  Both Susan and Audrey were involved in the Polio Eradication Initiative in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia.

Next week our program is on Prostate Health and is presented to us by Leanne Kopp.  Enough said!

Have a great weekend everyone.

World's Biggest Commercial Finale

More than 90,000 people from 170 countries have added their photo to Rotary’s World’s Biggest Commercial, a digital campaign to support the fight to end polio. Celebrities and others across the globe uploaded a photo of themselves doing the “this close” pose to the campaign website. Each photo was added to an ever-expanding online web-based video with the likes of notable figures including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Bill Gates, Archie Panjabi, Jackie Chan and others. The resulting video has grown to over three hours long!
