Presentation: Canada’s Competitive Advantage in the Global Warming Age
Chris started by pointing out that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased by 25% since he entered university. Canada, along with other signatories to the Paris Climate Agreement has pledged to take measures to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases. Last summer, Canada signed an agreement with the United States & Mexico to produce half of their electricity by 2025 from low-carbon technologies. While the United States is now at a third, and Mexico is at less than 20% of its electricity from low carbon technologies, Canada currently produces 81% of its electricity from hydro, nuclear, wind & solar.
Chris illustrated his presentation with figures taken from a
report released two weeks ago by Dr Mark Jaccard, a professor of sustainable energy in the school of Resource & Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University. The report examines the effect of regulations together with carbon pricing on emissions from key sectors of the Canadian economy. He also presented a
figure published by the
Solutions Project, under the direction of Dr Mark Jacobson, professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Stanford University; the figure projects a transition to 100% wind, water and solar energy in Canada by 2050.
Next week: Larry & Jim on History of the Club. There will also be an executive meeting.
