April 21, 2015 Meeting

Special Off-Site Meeting

Guests:  Beverley Beaith, the Mum-in-law of Suzy.

Program: Vancouver Island Regional Public Library

          *Strong Libraries  *Strong Communities

This was a special off-site meeting.  We met at our new public library on Hammond Bay Rd and were given a wonderful introduction to the services and amenities available through the library.  After an informative – and very lively – question and answer session, our guide, Nathan (Children’s Librarian) took us on the grand tour.  Everyone was duly impressed and I think a few even got a library card!

Here are just few of the services and amenities available:

Basic borrowing information
  • Standard loan period 3 weeks (21 days)
  • CDs 3 weeks (21 days)
  • DVDs 1 week (7 days)
  • High demand items with more than 4 holds per copy 14 days
  • Express Reads – 1 week (7 days)
  • eBook/audiobook collections (3 weeks)

Technologies offered:
  • Public access to computers
  • Free wireless internet access
  • Photocopying and printing
  • Language learning program

Tech Tuesdays:

  • eBook questions
  • Computer skills training
  • Drop in for free technology help from the librarian.
  • All skill levels and questions welcome.
A few other programs include:
  • Family story time, Toddler time, Babytime
  • LEGO Club  (Audrey – this one’s for you.)
  • eBook Start-up help with Tablets and eReaders
Following the library tour, we met at Piper’s Pub for a bite to eat.  Unfortunately there were too few seats in the reserved section, so when Gill, Suzy and I arrived, we couldn’t sit at the ‘Big Table’ with the adults – we had to sit at the ‘Kids Table’. Then, we had to wait an hour for our supper to be served.  The Big Table folk had their drinks, supper, paid and some had even left by the time we were served.

It’s interesting to note that John and Marsha did manage to sneak in to the Big Table…

Birthdays/Anniversaries:  Correction:  We sang our “special” happy birthday to our own Paul Geneau last week, not Ed Poli as was erroneously reported.  My apologies to Paul and Ed. Lee’s Note: I guess chairing the meeting and taking meeting notes was harder than I thought.J

Next Week:  Francois deJong, Nanaimo Food Share
Francois will update us on the Summer Lunch-Munch Program.

Special Thank you to Audrey and Barb for arranging such interesting programs for us each and every week.

Door Prize:   Reminder to Derek who is responsible for bringing the gift next week.  Remember if it’s your turn to bring the door prize and you find that you are not able to attend, you need to find someone else to bring it for you.
