We welcomed back Liz Karahawa, one of our proposed new members! We also enjoyed having Bruce Forward join us whom has
been a rotarian for 48 years! It was also great to have Roger Northwood's wife Ann with us. Larry introduced Blair Maleyko, whom is interested to see what rotary is all about, and Robert Dodds from the Oceanside Rotary Club joined us as well as our amazing speaker this evening Andrea Rosato-Taylor.
This week Colin shared with us the qualifications for becoming a member on a Group Study Exchange Rotary Team or as we tend to call it the GSE Team. This is a wonderful learning and fellowship opportunity for non rotarians that are citizens from the country that they exchange from and also live there and are currently employed. He also mentioned that there are somewhere between 4000 and 6000 GSE Alumni. More information is available on the Rotary website or thru Colin.

We had a report back from Jeff with regard to the Community Breakfast. The committee got together and toured the Salvation Army Hall and we had great feedback. Its a larger hall which is great as over time we can accommodate more people to sit. At this time we sit 36 people and the Salvation Army can sit 60 at a time. There is a larger kitchen, with a bigger dishwasher and a rotating toaster! Jim spoke to them with regards to the gaming funds and the understanding is that its not an issue. One of the other important factors is that there will not be an increase in cost. Thanks to the Committee! The November breakfast will be at the Salvation Army Facilities. Great news!!!
Andrea is the first woman publisher for the Nanaimo Daily News. She has a passion for this great newspaper and shared
with us that there are 3 things that help with success which are : the will, confidence, and great resilience! She certainly has
all those! The newspaper has been in operation for 141 years and when you consider all of Nanaimo's history that is captured in this, its rather amazing, definitely the best reason why it needs to keeps its readers and its advertisers and be a successful newspaper. The Nanaimo Daily News comes out 5 days a week, Tuesday to Saturday and has 5000 print subscribers and 100 digital. Andrea shared with us some of the woes of newspapers and it made us realize how many facets there are to running a successful newspaper. We are so lucky in Canada to have newspapers and in our area 9 out of 10 still read it! Thanks Andrea !
