Meeting: April 7th , 2020
President Barney presided over our very first Nanaimo North virtual meeting. An impressive number of club members embraced new technology and attended!
Guests: None .
Visiting Rotarians: None.
Rotary Minute:
Colin gave us some info about Rotary World Peace Scholarships. An average of 7.5 million dollars are given out each year for terms lasting up to four years.
Announcements:
- A decision will be made about the next Loaves and Fishes session on the 28th by the 21st of the month
- The district conference has been cancelled
- Dragon boat has been cancelled.
- The 2020 International Conference in Hawaii has been cancelled.
- Breakfast was cancelled this month.
- The Craft Beer Crawl is not cancelled but is, of course, going very slowly.
Birthdays and Anniversaries:
- Jim and Ed. If you think Happy Birthday sounds bad at a regular meeting, it is spectacularly bad in a virtual meeting.
- Gill had a Rotary Anniversary.
New Member:
Perry inducted a new member into our club this week. It was our pleasure to welcome Johann Kruger. He is not a new Rotarian as he belonged to Rotary clubs in Quesnel and Prince George. He and his wife Retha moved to Nanaimo in 2011 where their son and grandson live. He is a retired electric and electronic engineer - although he still has his own company. Welcome Johann!
Points to Ponder:
Can't wait until tomorrow. I have another big day of hand washing and looking out of the window planned.
Program:
This week we had presentations from our exchange students. We are fortunate that both were able to stay in Canada during the virus quarantine andthat is a bonus for us all.
Catherine spoke first and she showed us slides from her home country of Taiwan and her stay in Canada. School is different here (no school uniforms). She has enjoyed a number of new things here like Halloween, snowmen, hockey, kayaking skiing and curling. (hockey is great, curling is hard!)
She has one younger sister and one younger brother. Her Dad was a firefighter but now works for the government. Her Mom teaches banking.
Igor spoke next about his home in Poland. He had some wonderful slides showing the sights and a good number showing the foods of his homeland. Both looked very good!
