Program:
Derick introduced our guest speakers, Lisa Stockton (Clinical Director) and Joel Hughes (Clinical Director) from Edgewood Treatment Centre. The centre is a bit of an unknown place here in Nanaimo but they have been quietly helping people with mental health and addiction issues for a number of years.
Joel spoke about his desire to help break the cycle of addition that can run through families and sometimes even through generations. He noted that it’s not just the addict but the suffering of their families that can be helped. He reminded us that addictions can be more than drugs and alcohol. There can be issues with shopping, gambling, sex and even work.
It seems that a lot of their work is to teach people how to handle the issues that drove them to additive or destructive behaviour in the first place. It’s not just about teaching them to handle their addition, but also to understand how to deal with the underlying causes. Those new coping skills - and the follow up effort - can help people to a much more productive and happy life.
This was an excellent presentation and we could all see the passion that these two have for their work. The number of questions that the club had showed that we were all very interested in the topic as well.
Our speakers Lisa Stockton (Clinical Director) and Joel Hughes (Clinical Director) from Edgewood Treatment Center.
