 Meeting:  April 18, 2023
Jim gave the Rotary Minute and reminded us of the Giant Bingo held in 1982 ( or thereabouts) . At that time there were no rules. The Bingo was held at Frank Crane Arena and the club thought that we might get 500 or so folks to play. Over 2000 turned up and at 5 pm when the doors opened there was a line of people stretching out onto Bowen Road. We made $15,000 that night. Frank Allen was in change of selling hot dogs and  but when he called out for customers it was thought that he had called Bingo!. A memorable night.! Proceeds went towards the Fire Safety House.
Guests:  Anne Northwood, Don Shandley, Radek Wojtal,
Greg Antoz, Moin Edraki ( who has been proposed for membership)

Announcements:
  • Larry and Keith reminded everyone about the Trash Pickup this Saturday ( April 22). Last year 70 volunteers picked up 1.2 tons of garbage. This year the goal is 100 volunteers and 2 tons of garbage. Everyone is required to sign a waiver and asked to wear a colourful vest, strong work gloves and footwear. Anyone with a truck or van to help transfer the bags is asked to contact Larry or Keith.
  • Rob advised that the breakfast scheduled for last Saturday had to be cancelled as the food truck  had a problame with its electricity.
  • Larry advised that our Loaves and Fishes evening is next Tuesday April 25.
  • Paul said he would be attending the District Conference in Victoria May 19/20. Derek will also be there.
  • Jim advised that the Garage Sale would be on May 27. Details to follow. However if you or your friends and neighbours have stuff   it can be stored until then - contact Jim.
  • Derek talked about his involvement with Rotaract and using art to market. The Rotaract club at the University is very active. The Downtown club have had a presentation.
  •  Perry announced that we received a card from the Japanese Canadian Society thanking us for the cherry tree.

Birthdays: Gill and Paul. We sang ( you might call it singing) to Paul .  Sheila advised on Gill's health which is not good news. On Gill's behalf, Jim invited everyone to her birthday get-together at Origin at Longwood on Saturday. Drop in anytime between 2- 4 pm.

Happy/ Sad  Dollars:
Jim and Vicki are engaged!!!! Congratulations! Wedding to take place at The Grand Hotel on October 7th - invites to follow
Derek has been speaking to the Dover Bay Arts Class and finds that no-one knows about Rotary - we need to fix that. He has also been using Art for fundraisers  trying to raise awareness of projects and organizations.
Paul is going to Manila to help with another eye clinic - he sure gets to travel the world with these clinics!

Comedy Corner: What is the most expensive vehicle? A Costco shopping cart! ( Groan - Perry you can do better than that!)

Program:
Crystal Lee, VIU MBA Community Engagement Coordinator,  gave us an interesting presentation about the VIU MBA Internship Program.  MBA students are available to local businesses to help with short term projects. Many of the Students are from other parts of the world and bring  a rich diversity of knowledge, skills and abilities.
