The Etta Project:
The last bulletin forgot to mention the $2500 cheque from Ken Hammer to President Paul for the Etta Projects. This week we received a $1500 donation from the Rotary Club of South Cowichan for the same latrine project.
In case you missed the joint gathering last Thursday, about 57 Rotarians and friends (and 4 students from VIU) listened to the amazing Pennye Nixon speak about the work she does in Bolivia. This work is what the Etta Projects are all about. She is a very dynamic speaker and is greatly appreciative of our support. After hearing about the work she does, we are greatly appreciative of her amazing caring and energy. This is wonderful work made even better because it is self sustaining. There is not enough time in the bulletin to do this evening justice - Please see www.ettaprojects.org for more information about this outstanding organization.
Doug, Pennye, Paul and Craig Gillis

Why are a “wise man” and a “wise guy” opposites?
Program:
Dave Hammond and Victoria Drakeford (who is a landscape architect) spoke to our club about the 100th anniversary of the Downtown club (and Rotary in Nanaimo). To celebrate the May 1st 2020 anniversary, the Downtown club is building a public garden space at Maffeo Sutton park next to the playground. The new council was a great help in finalizing the plans. The project was inspired by the the work and values of Rotary - promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water sanitation and hygiene, supporting mothers and children, supporting education and helping to group local economies. The design elements include the wavy water, the logs on the beach and the Rotary wheel. It will have benches and lighting along with the Rotary wheel in the middle of this circular garden.
The city will start work on the improvements on the playground and the lagoon this September. The Rotary club will be responsible for the garden after some more planning work is complete.
Other items planned for the anniversary
- Centennial Gala on May1st 2020
- 100th Anniversary Book (updated from the 75th anniversary book)
- Opening of the time capsule - placed in 1987 at the entrance to town and replacing it with a new capsule in the park.
- Speakers bureau for Rotary education about all the non capital projects.
