Colin's Rotary Minute:

ROTARY MOTTOS
The first motto of Rotary International, “He Profits Most Who Serves Best," was approved at the second Rotary Convention, held in Portland, Oregon, in August 1911. The phrase was first stated by a Chicago Rotarian, Art Sheldon, who made a speech in 1910 which included the remark, "He profits most who serves his fellows best." At about the same time, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, commented that the proper way to organize a Rotary club was through the principle his club had adopted-"Service, Not Self." These two slogans, slightly modified, were formally approved to be the official mottoes of Rotary at the 1950 Convention in Detroit- "He Profits Most Who Serves Best" and "Service Above Self." The 1989 Council on Legislation established "Service Above Self" as the principal motto of Rotary, since it best explains the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service.

Program(s):

The first presentation, Anna-Maria Korell,  the Manager of Fund Raising and Development for Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island, gave a presentation on a 25 unit building being built by Habitat on Metral Drive,  the first of a new type of building to deal with the high cost of housing, which includes multiple living units verses the old format of single family dwellings. Habitat will retain ownership of the building while allowing occupants to save up a portion of their rent payments.

The 2nd presentation was by Dave Hammond and Dr. Mark James of Fair Healthcare For All who talked about the underfunding of the Nanaimo Hospital, the second class healthcare north of the Malahat, and the fight to get doctors, specialists and equipment for over half of the population of Vancouver Island.

Their Mission:
To ensure that all people North of the Malahat have access to culturally appropriate and comprehensive, tertiary healthcare in
Nanaimo.

Their Vision:

NRGH is expanded to become a comprehensive, tertiary hospital with an integrated approach to care and wellness that
benefits all people north of the Malahat. Excellent care for everyone, everywhere, every time.

The disturbing facts are that:

NRGH  is not meeting the appropriate standard of care for heart attacks or cardiac care.
● 2 Cardiologists at NRGH vs. 22 in Victoria.
● 2 Cath Labs in Victoria vs. 0 in North/Central Island.
● Largest population over 400,000 without a Catheterization lab in Canada.
● Greater burden of every form of cardiac disease compared to South Island.
● Patients with heart disease can’t get access to the care they need and many suffer poorer outcomes sometimes fatal.

● No Oncologists at NRGH for Central and North Island
versus 40 in South Island
● 3,360 new Cancer diagnosis in 2023 in Central and North Island versus 3,215 in the South
● 2,472 people living with Cancer in 2021 in Central and North Island versus 2,192 in the South
● 53% of Cancer cases occur north of the Malahat.
Everyone is being asked to take action- volunteer, donate and
