Barney introduced Glen Reed, Nanaimo BMX President. It’s very much a community for their members and it doesn’t matter if you are 2 or 62, everyone rides. They have a saying - no one rides the bench.
The BMX Club operates under the umbrella of the BMX Canada sanctioning body. The Nanaimo BMX Association is a bicycle motocross facility located at Beban Park. It was developed to be accessible by all bike riders in the Nanaimo area. Their local membership is comprised of approximately 350 riders who live in the mid-island area between Coombs and Duncan. The facility attracts a variety of different age groups
Nanaimo BMX has produced a number of very successful riders and they compete across Canada and the US. The facility has a great reputation but it is 30 years old and is in need up upgrading to bring it up to new standards. In particular the starting gate and the hill it is on needs to be redone. In fact, it is in need of about $320,000. The city has indicated that it might match the funds raised but there is still a ways to go.
Jim thanked Glen.
