Meeting: December 4th, 2018
Guests: Ann Northwood, Cara Klein, Chris Campbell, Sheila Anderson, Lynn Hanney, Glynis Hayes
Visiting Rotarians: None
Foundation: Colin gave the Rotary moment and reminded us that Paul Harris fellows are those that have donated $1000 US over the years. We are fortunate enough to have over 100 Paul Harris fellowships in the club. Nope that's not a mistake - some members are multiple donors.
Announcements:
- Larry reported that the last Loaves and Fishes went well.
- December 8th will be the next Rotary Breakfast at the Salvation Army center.
- MIG (Mid Island Group) met recently and may create a group to look into projects that might help our indigenous peoples on the island. By the way, the MIG group exists to help with Rotary projects that may be too large for a single club to deal with. Also note that if you are interested in travel, there are a number of opportunities given the various Rotary projects.
- Bob reports that the upcoming craft fair (Dec 14th, 15th and 16th) still needs a few more volunteers for Saturday. He will send out emails to those that are participating with details and schedules. It will be held in Nanaimo North Mall (old Sears).
- Derek reminded us that the next meeting is on Dec 18th and is our Christmas bash. He has sent out an email so please let him know as soon as possible if you will be attending.
Birthdays/Anniversaries:
- No one confessed to either

Program:
Stephanie Dancevic was our speaker this week. She is an employment councillor for the Career Centre. There are a number of people that simply don’t have the skills for finding employment. They are candidates for employment counselling at VIVRS (Vancouver Island Vocational and Rehabilitation Services). They help people that may have difficulties - physical or emotional - approaching potential employers and will facilitate a meeting between the parties. They will help discover what the employee can currently do and see if there may be something that needs those skills. People who are under employed or perhaps may be losing their current job, can seek help at VIVRS as well. It seems that it can be a very personalized service for each of their clients and they can take any disabilities that the person might have into consideration.
So, if you know of someone or perhaps are approached by someone that might have these issues, VIVRS may be the solution.
Inductions:
Sheila Anderson is back! She is well known to most of us since she was a member of our club for a number of years. This included a year as club president. So good to have her back. Gill did the honours of inducting her.
Serena Klaver is a new member for us. She is a land use planner for the Saltspring Island Trust and graduated this last June with a masters at VIU. Jeff did the honours for her.
What good fortune to have two new members join us tonight!
Join the Zonta Club of Nanaimo for dinner and a special presentation to help promote health and education for women and girls. The dinner will be held on Tuesday December 11th, at 5:30 pm at the Bee’s Knees Community Cafe at 208 Wallace Street. The cost is just $15 per person. Please RSVP to Barbara Waine at 250-758-2267.
