A small group of dedicated members met in the large Banquet Hall at the Golf Club..
The net take from the Garage Sale was $1838.32 including $230 raised by Jim attending the Car Trunk sale the following Saturday.
Rob reported on the family school dinners. It appears that the 2nd Tuesday of each month is a problem for Bayview as the teachers have a regular after school meeting. However after discussion it was agred that that date is best for us and we can set up the dinner ourselves. Agreed that we woud be alternating between Bayview and Fairview.
Ed moved his 2024/2025 Butget which had been circulated by email to the club. Sheila seconded it . Carried unanimously.
Don had prepared, for our archives, and for the meeting, slide shows of the Installation at the Dinghy Dock Pub and the Garage Sale. Don is of course in Calgary attending the Stampede. The shows were annotated in Don's usual fashion and very entertaining!
Derek introduced Fred Von Schellwitz, who needed no introducton as he is one of our own. Fred joined Rotary in 1967 in Medecine Hat and has continud to be a member since then, joining a new club whenever he relocated, Calgary South 1970, Campbell River 1972, Vernon 2012 and Nanaimo North 2023, Fred talked\about his "make-ups" around the world during his years in Rotary.
Way back when it used to be compulsory to attend weekly meetings, if you travelled you visited a local club to "make-up" for not attending at your own club. Fred related some fascinating stories about his adventures. In Canada he has visited Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa. In the US Seattle, San Francisco, New York City, Dallas and McCall Idaho, In Mexico, Mexico City, Acapulco, Rincon de Guayabitos ( Ed's note - I too made up at that club some years ago!). In Europe , London, Taunton, Edinburh, Paris South, Madrid, Rome, Berlin, Frankfurt, Dresden and Bayreuth. Also, Cairo, Hong Kong. Tokyo and Bangkok.
Some of his memorable encounters were, getting tickets for the opera, Marriage of Figaro, in Dresden through Rotary and finding hiself in the King's box; visiting McCall, Idaho with his Medicine Hat club and being welcomed with a band and flags being housed
in Rotarians homes taken up river to a lodge owned by one of the members and then given a gift of.....potatoes (of course) , which then caused them a weight problem at the airport going home. There were several more anecdotes but if you want to hear them you need to sit down with Fred another day.
