Colin's Rotary Minute:

OPPORTUNITIES FOR FELLOWSHIP
Most Rotarians are successful professional and business executives because they hear opportunities knock and take advantage of them. The opportunity for Rotary fellowship occurs at each club meeting, but not all members hear it knocking.
The club meeting is a special privilege of Rotary membership. It provides the occasion to visit with fellow members, to meet visitors you have not known before, and to share your personal friendship with other members.
Rotary clubs which have a reputation of being "friendly clubs" usually follow a few simple steps: First, members are encouraged to sit in a different seat or at a different table each week. Second, Rotarians are urged to sit with a member they may not know as well as their long-time personal friends. Third, members invite new members or visitors to join their table just by saying: "Come join us, we have an empty chair at this table."
Fourth, members share the conversation around the table rather than merely eating in silence or talking privately to the person next to them. Fifth, Rotarians make a special point of trying to get acquainted with all members of the club by seeking out those they may not know.
When Rotarians follow these five easy steps, an entirely new opportunity for fellowship knocks. Soon Rotarians realize that warm and personal friendship is the cornerstone of every great Rotary club.

Guests:  Elijah Galart

At the last meeting Fred read from a certificate he had received from his former Rotary club. Here it is for your enjoyment.

Derek introduced Drew Cooper of the Nanaimo Hornets Rugby Club.
Drew has spent 26 years with PacificSport Vancouver Island, a not-for-profit regional sport hub created to lead athlete, coach, and community sport services on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.   (more info at https://pacificsportvi.com/)
Drew talked about the Mini Rugby Program run by Nanaimo Hornets Club for elementary kids.
The program is designed to engagae kids is healthy outdoor activity instead of  siting viewing social media. Remember when kids cycled everywhere?
And now in their spare time!
There were 35 kids at the start of the program. This year there are 170. There are two 10 week programs,  spring and fall. There is no cost for enrolment through certain schools, $65 otherwise.

If you need more info from Drew his contact is: 250 327-4646 coopdrew0@gmail.com.

Sheila reminded everyone that Project Amigo Canada has a fundraiser for backpacks for the scholarship students. $148 for a backpack plus contents. Any contribution no matter how small is welcome.
IN MEMORIAM - ROGER NORTHWOOD
Sadly Roger passed away this week. It was not unexpected as he had been in care for some time.
Roger retired to Nanaimo from Civil Engineering in Woodbridge,  Ontario, where he had been a Rotarian and past president of the Rotary  Club  of Woodbridge.
Our thoughts and condolences to Anne who we hope will continue to attend our meetings as an  honorary member.
