The Rotary Foundation
At the 1917 convention, Arch Klumph proposed setting up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” An initial contribution of $26.50, set in motion a powerful force that has transformed millions of lives around the globe. Since it was founded, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects.
In 2022-2023 grants were provided as follows:
473 District grants totalling $26 M
324 Disaster Response Grants totalling $15M
1092 Global Grants totalling $55M and
1 Program of Scale Grant of $2M.
The Rotary Foundation is a public charity operated exclusively for charitable purposes When you contribute to the Rotary Foundation you contribute to the Canadian Associate and receive a charitable receipt for Income Tax purposes.
All Rotarians are encouraged to donate to The Rotary Foundation and the simplest way is by becoming a Sustaining Member when you give $100 US or more per year to the Annual Fund.
You become a Benefactor when you include the Endowment Fund as a beneficiary of $1,000 or more in your will. A Paul Harris Fellow is when you have donated $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus, or an approved Foundation grant.
A Multiple Paul Harris Fellow is when you give additional gifts of $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus, or an approved Foundation grant.
The Foundation receives your donations each year and invests those funds for 3 years. The income earned helps support administration. At the end of the 3 years the funds are available to Rotary Clubs for the various grants including Global Matching Grants and District Grants, which fund smaller-scale, short-term projects that address immediate needs in your community or abroad.
Birthdays: Sheila was serenaded in the usual way.
Anniversaries: Rob and Barb - 40 years
Program:
Derek introduced Jeff Campbell, a Regisered Hearing Instrument Practitioner who founded "Ears to You" a mobile hearing clinic in 2020. Starting with one van in Nanaimo the company now serves Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, Calgary and Southern Ontario. Jeff explained in layman's terms the various reasons for, and the types of, hearing loss and the advances which have been made in hearing aid technology. He encouraged everyone to have their hearing tested. Studies have shown that hearing loss leads to reduced quality of life. The latest hearing devices can connect to personal devices and differentiate up to 64 frequency bands, boosting only the sounds needed.
It was a very interesting and informative talk which produced a lot of questions from the members. Thank you Jeff.
