Meeting: February 21, 2023
Colin's Rotary History:
2021/22
The installation for Cara Klein and the board was on Zoom with everyone encouraged to wear a Hawaiian shirt and have a pitcher of Mai Tai’s. Ian Thompson was the Rotarian of the Year and Don Dempson received the president’s citation.
The relaxation of COVID restrictions allowed us to return to in-person meetings in September of 2021 but COVID was still very much present making it difficult to do much in the way of fellowship. Barney, Glynis and Cara deserve a huge thank you for conducting the on-line meetings so well during the challenging restrictions.
Our fundraisers were:
- Popcorn/Hot Dog sales
- Garage sale
- Golf Ball Drop
The garage sale was held at 6 member’s homes providing good fellowship. It was complete with torrential rain. We had tents over everything. The garage sale enthusiasts are definitely not deterred by rain and made the sale a success.
We were helped at the Golf Ball Drop by the Nanaimo Fire Department who provided a ladder truck to drop the 4000 golf balls out of a converted recycling bin. The evening before the drop we had the Upside Guys from CHEK broadcast live from the Nanaimo Golf club and we sold out because of their publicity. As a matter of fact, the sales came in so quickly we could not stop them and oversold. Ed Poli begged forgiveness from BC Lotteries. Also to thank, was the Nanaimo Golf Club for allowing us to use the practice putting green for the drop.
For fellowship, the five Rotary Clubs took part in Earth Day by cleaning up a section of the Parkway near the Northfield rest stop. The five clubs also took part in the Coldest Day of the Year walk. There were 11 walkers from our club who raised $1600 for the cause.
This is the end of the history summaries of the 50 Rotary years. The remaining weeks of this Rotary year will have stories and events from these years.

The human race relies on communicating to survive, yet we are horrible communicators. Every day we experience assumptions, conflict, triggers, and disconnect, but we never really hone our communication skills. In her latest book Blaise Hunter takes you on a journey of becoming a Captain Communicator. You can learn how to:
• Reduce arguments and turn them into meaningful dialogues.
• Heal the internal wounds by taking control of our narratives.
• Speak the body's language.
• Become a universal translator.
