President Jim Turley started the meeting at 6:15 pm at Nanaimo Golf Club
O’Canada followed by invocation. 
 
Guests:   Chris Campbell; Susan Mielke.
 
Visiting Rotarians:  Bev Hilton, Assistant Governor Area 4, Nanaimo Oceanside Club; Marg Hundt, Comox Club;  Henrie Beaudoin, Comox Club;  Lorna Curtis, District Foundation Fundraising Chair, Oak Bay Club; Ken                                                Hammer, Nanaimo Daybreak Club;  Jamie Black, Nanaimo Daybreak Club, in process of transferring to Nanaimo North.

A wonderful roasted pork dinner was had by all.
Formal part of the meeting started at 6:43pm.
 
Rotary Minute:  Colin provided the Rotary Minute about matching District Community Grants for club international and domestic projects and gave various examples. The four way test.
 
Member Moment: For the benefit of the guests President Jim described what Member Moments was, however, there was no presentation tonight.
 
Announcements:  
 
  1. President Jim informed us that:
  • December 5th meeting will be the club’s Annual General Meeting. A list of the proposed new board was read.
  • The Beer and Burger fundraiser netted over $2,500. A big thanks to the Nanaimo Daybreak Club for the number of members attending our event.
  • The next Beer and Burger event is scheduled to take place on April 17th
  • Don Dempson’s Xmas Rotary Card Fundraiser has sold 21 card sets and the first cheque proceeds has been given to Jim
  • Loaves and Fishes next week
  • December 5th next AGM and Chris Beaton of the Aboriginal Society will be presenting
  • Club Xmas Party will be on the December 12th at the golf club
  • Birthdays and Anniversaries: Colin and Craig
  • Next meeting on December 5th at 6:10pm, same location, preceded by thirty minutes of fellowship.
 
       2. Henrie Beaudoin of the Comox Club described their annual smoked salmon fundraiser (the second time in successive years that the club has sold smoked Salmon at our club meetings). The program raises money for the Comox Club’s international service projects.

       3.  Lorna Curtis, District Foundation Fundraising Chair. She mentioned our goal this year of $3,500, for which we are already at $2,100, for Paul Harris contributions. She also mentioned the advantages of Rotary Direct for contributions.

Program  
 
At 6:55 Bev Hilton, Ken Hammer, and Susan Mielke began the main presentation about their May 2017 Trip to Ghana and each discussed ten slides as a focus for their presentation.
 
- Bev Hilton’s involved: - woven fabric, Ghana’s District Conference, scenes of Oceanside’s three school project, the Daybreak Market Project which they observed on market day, Vincent Kusi-Kyei and his family, and some pictures of a hospital tour.

- Susan Mielke’s involved: - a hospital tour, a prison tour, medical clinic, a second private hospital tour (160 bed Catholic and underfunded). They were toured in the large part by Rotarian doctors.
 
- Ken Hammer’s involved: - The Ghana tour takes place every other year and the alternate year Ghanaian Rotarians come to Canada.  A visit with Vincent Kusi-Kyei and his family, a visit at a prison demonstrating vocational training and a tee shirt give-away, discussion on the portable ultra sound project, and the Ken Hammer School which has an enrolment of 1,000 students.
