Today's fun fact: President Cara asked which member had played piano for David Foster? No one knew the answer - it was Larry Rumming! (Ed's note : I didn't know he played the piano!)
Colin's Rotary Minute:
THE DISTRICT CONFERENCE
Most Rotarians have never attended a Rotary district conference.
A district conference is for all club members and their spouses, not just for club officers and committee members. The purpose of a district conference is for fellowship, good fun, inspirational speakers and discussion of matters which make one's Rotary membership more meaningful. Every person who attends a district conference finds that being a Rotarian becomes even more rewarding because of the new experiences, insights and acquaintances developed at the conference.
Every one of Rotary's more than 500 districts has a conference annually and the Rotary International president selects a representative to attend and address each conference. The program always includes several outstanding entertainment features, interesting discussions and inspirational programs.
Lasting friendships grow from the fellowship hours at the district conference. ( The next District 5020 conference is to be held in Victoria in May 2026) Plan to attend.
Announcements:
Rob has followed up with Carol Ann about helping Haven Society as a new community service project for the club. Haven gave us several options which Rob presented. The members are generally in favour of helping with more enthusiasm for hands on work at their former location.
The Youth Exchange Fundraiser Bar-B-Q

There will be a silent auction to raise money in support of RYE. Donations are being sought, with preference given to items such as Bottles of Wine, Craft Beer, and Gift Cards to local Restaurants and Retail Outlets. This year, our 4 Rotary Clubs will sponsor three students one from each of Sweden, Germany, and Switzerland.
This program is entirely volunteer-run, and funds raised are directly used to help offset the costs of supporting students in Nanaimo. Any donations to this cause would be appreciated.
FUN FEST at Maffeo Sutton Park September 14th.
Saturday and Sunday September 13/14 the Nanaimo Jazz Festival takes place in Maffeo Sutton Park and the various activities that were booked for our Labour Day Fun Fest (cancelled due to competition from the 55+ Games ) bouncy castles, climbing wall, kayaking on the lagoon etc) will be available on the Sunday adding a Fun Fest component to the Jazz Festival. We will issue the wristbands in return for a donation to Rotary. There will also be popcorn - again by donation. Ed has a roster of volunteers for 2 shifts 10.30 - 2.00 and 2.00 - 5.30 but if you would like to help with the setup and/or take down, contact Ed.
Another Bar-B-Q !!! Nanaimo Rotarians and guests are invited:
Program:
After some trouble with our video link, Derek and Perry managed to overcome (but not solve) the problem and eventually we saw and heard Mic McDaniel from the Rotary Club of South Tacoma who talked about his project of empowering Future Nurses in rural India.

This girl inspired Mic to create the program. She was graduating from high school and wanted to become a nurse. The brick structure is a typical home, created from an unused pipe.
Last Minute Info and Request:
The Nanaimo Ladysmith Schools Foundation is doing the launch of their 2025 Stock the Lockers campaign on Sunday, August 24 at Nanaimo North Town Centre. It will be a family focused event with Bouncy Castles, Climbing Wall etc and they have asked if our club would barbecue the hot dogs.

The event goes from 11:00 to 4:00 on Sunday August 24 - if you're available for any of that time and willing to help out please let Ed know.
