Colin's Rotary Minute:
LESSONS IN ROTARY GEOGRAPHY
• Were you aware that the Rotary Club of Reno, Nevada, is farther west than the Rotary Club of Los Angeles, California?
• Would you guess that the meetings of the Rotary Club of Portland, Maine, are farther south than those of the clubs in London, England?
• Can you imagine that the Pensacola, Florida, Rotary Club is west of the Detroit, Michigan, club?
• It's a fact that the Cairo, Illinois, Rotary Club is south of Richmond, Virginia.
• There are 69 Rotary clubs with the word "Tokyo" in their club names.
• The Rotary Club of Nome, Alaska, lies west of the club in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the Santiago, Chile, club is located east of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
• Rotary geographers will know that virtually every Rotary club meeting in Australia is east of the Hong Kong Rotary Club.
• What do the Rotary clubs of Quito, Ecuador, Libreville, Gabon, Singapore, and Kampala, Uganda, have in common? You guessed right if you said they all meet approximately on the equator.
There are many interesting relationships and things to learn as you become acquainted with the approximately 1.2 million Rotarians in more than 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.
Guests: Anne Northwood and Joyce Clarke
Visiting Rotarians: Hillary Brown from Nanaimo Daybreak
Announcements:
Jim reminded us that our beer and burger fundraiser at the Lantzville pub is just over 1 weeks away. The current number of sold tickets for the event is 37. Some members have expressed interest in some of the auction items but are unable to attend the event. We are setting up the ability to bid by proxy. I will send out another email next Friday to let everyone one know which members will be attending so that those wishing to bid by proxy can make contact with an attending member of their choice to bid on your behalf.
Jim mentioned a proposed fundraiser, Rib Fest (not likely to be held this year) and the Garage Sale in May.
Rob reported on the dinner put on at Bayview School
Don reminded us of the Coldest Night of the Year Walk Saturdays February 24th.
Paul made a few comments about youth exchange.
Hillary Brown our guest Rotarian did a brief presentation on their club event “a Taste Africa” March 8.
Program:
The guest speaker was Sharon Welch, Executive Director of the Nanaimo Community Hospice Society. This organization provides a Grief Support Program designed to support children, youth, adults and seniors who have lost a loved one through death. They provide individual counselling, bereavement group support, a lending library and wellness programs.
Their vision is that the dying will experience peace and dignity, their caregivers will receive the help they need, and their friends and family will be supported in their grief. Hospice programs are free and include short-term support from their counsellors, group programs and individual support in the home, in hospital, in care facilities, and through Hospice House.
In the photo Sharon is holding items from their "Care Bag" that they give patients to help with their 'comfort levels' as they go through
end of life transitions.
