Colin's Rotary Minute:

Community Service.
A community, defined in its simplest terms, is a group of people who have something in common. But in real life, it is something far more complex than that. Each member — every individual, group, organization, and business — draws benefits from the community in many different ways. For a community to thrive, each of its members must honor a commitment to contribute to the well-being of the whole by returning those benefits in kind.
Rotarians recognize the importance of giving back to the community. After all, Community Service is one of the Four Avenues of Service. Every Rotary club and every Rotarian assumes a responsibility to find ways to improve the quality of life for those in their communities and to serve the public interest. When those efforts are effective, they not only contribute to the greater good, they also promote Rotary's positive image. What makes a community service effort effective? Relevance. A community service project must address a real, current community concern or issue. Rotary clubs should start by surveying their communities to find out where help is needed. Once a club has listened to its community, it can begin to envision effective responses to problems.

Program:   Bern Muller, Executive Director of Nanaimo Salvation Army

Bern talked about the history of the Salvation Army starting back in 1888 in Nanaimo at 19 Nicol Street. In 1953 building was renovated and a new front was put on with changes to the interior as well and a gymnasium was created that did double duty as a place of worship and church hall.

The focus of the Salvation Army has evolved to provide shelter, a dining room for eating, outreachopportunities, family services for those in need, a gymnasium or exercise area, community programs, thrift stores, church services, youth programs, emergency response equipment. Moved to the new location in 1986 (at the corner of Bruce and Eighth street). In 2023 serious renovations began and the New Hope centre started its transformation with two new floors to the building on Nicol St, an update commercial kitchen and new program space. Today the New Hope Centre has 34 existing beds and 30 more for emergency winter use;  Serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is also served throughout the city from a movable truck.

Most stays are 4-5 days while staff and counsellors work with people but stays can last up to a month. Residents must work with counsellors and case workers’ to gain confidence, reintegrate into society, find a purpose and hopefully a path forward. The “Pathway of Hope” is the vision and helps those in need or trouble reacclimatize into society. Works with community partners.

Salvation Army does get financial support and grants but relies on the generosity and support from other agencies, organizations and people. The Kettle Drive (each Christmas) is its biggest fund raiser. Salvation Army is the largest non-governmental direct provider of social services in the country. The  work done by Rotary in the community is recognized and it is hoped we  ( Nanaimo North ) can revive a working relationship with a meal program likely at lunch (brunch)
