Meeting: April 2nd, 2024
Derek led us in O Canada and Sheila gave the invocation
Guests: Ron Willis
Visiting Rotarian: Joyce Smith (Nanaimo Rotary Club)
Editor’s Note: where is everyone? This is the second meeting in a row with dismal club attendance. (Only 15 members!)
Announcements:
Jim: the Garage Sale will be on May 25 but he is still looking for a location. If you have stuff for the sale let Jim know he will move his TR6 out of his garage and make room for stuff.
Paul: Youth Exchange Committee is looking for more members and for host families. Next meeting is April 18 if you are interested in attending.
Don :
April 5 - 14 Book Sale at Nanaimo North Town Centre (set-up is on the 4th) still looking for volunteers
May 25 - Push For Change - Cancelled and rescheduled for September
Cara: Bayview school dinner is next Tuesday. Additional volunteers are always welcome.
Ed: not enough interest from club members in the Labour Day Rib Fest.
Motion which was previously circulated to the club:
That a donation of $2225 in Gaming funds be made to the Salvation Army food program. Seconded by Jim.
The purpose of this donation is to top up the funds that Salvation Army is currently using to make food purchases for our Community Dinner program (these funds were previously used for the Community Breakfast program). This top up will ensure that there are sufficient funds with the Salvation Army to cover the costs of the Dinner program until the end of the 24/25 Rotary year.
Motion Carried.
Birthdays: Ed and Jim were given the usual rousing Happy Birthday chorus.
Program:
Paul introduced our 3 Exchange Students, Alex from Brussels,
Fonda from Bangkok and Antosia from Krakow.
Each gave some info about where they came from, their hobbies and interests and what they liked here in Nanaimo (mostly the great outdoors, not surprising since they are all from big cities). But they especially like Tim Hortons!
Together they told us about the trips which they have taken with the other Exchange Students in the District - California, Comox, Port Hardy, Tofino. All are grateful for the opportunity given by Rotary.
