Reports/Announcements
  • MIG has had a recent initiative to work with aboriginal peoples to help find out their issues and what we can do help.  In particular, the emphasis will be with aboriginal youth.  Chris Beaton is holding a youth conference in Nanaimo and MIG is hoping to help out financially and with some volunteer time.
  • MIG also contributed $2500 to the Bolivian project.  $4360 US is now on it’s way but it’s just part of a much larger amount for the total project.
  • Remember to let Jim know about your attendance for Barney’s induction on June 18th.
  • Bob Lasota let us know that the theme for Dragon Boat is Bollywood!  Any decorating ideas would be welcome.
  • He also gave us $500 dollars from the Longwood Brewery for help with their deck.  This was great work by Bob and we give him our applause and thanks!
  • The board gave Barney the nod to go ahead and look into the Ale Trail project.  It requires an upfront $2500 US fee that will give us cards (or website access) for people to get reductions or specials at the various breweries.
  • Loaves and Fishes last week had a good turnout
  • Bob Moss reminded us that Rotary would like everyone to get a criminal record check and the course for working with young people.  Bob and/or Paul can get you started.  As a club we must also agree to follow the policies of Rotary.  For example, if you wish to work with young people (Youth Exchange, RYLA, Interact, Rotaract etc) you must complete these requirements.
  • Note that we will not be meeting July 2nd  that night will be moved to July 9 after Dragon Boat. July 16 (gov meeting), July 30th Dingy Dock.

Paul Harris Presentations
Linda Gaffney was presented a Paul Harris (her second!) from Ed for all the help she has given us over the years (and for putting up with Ed).

Barney Sharp was also awarded his second Paul Harris fellow by Perry.  We all appreciate the commitment to the Foundation.  Thanks Barney!

Program
Our program tonight was about the Rotary Foundation and was presented by Perry Williams.  He reminded us that Rotary is not just about what we can do for the local community but also what we can do for the global community.  Arch Klumph (the sixth President of Rotary) started the foundation with $26.50 and urged Rotarians to ‘do good in the world’.
Your foundation gave out more than $86 million dollars in grants last year which most certainly was able to 'do good in the world'.  Just over $35 million of that was for health projects and of course, part of that was the Polio vaccination campaign.
Please give some thought to donating to the Foundation in order to some good in the world.  You’ll get a tax receipt, points on your credit card and get a nice warm feeling.
