Reports from Larry:

From January 15th Area 40 5-Club Partnership Meeting

1. Reminder for Coldest Night of the Year walk on February 24.  Don sent out an email with the details.  If you are walking – sign up and get your sponsors.  Remember to wear a Rotary shirt or hat.  If you are not walking – consider a donation. Our team page link is below.

https://secure.e2rm.com/registrant/TeamFundraisingPage.aspx?teamID=1006543&langPref=en-CA  If you participated in the 2023 walk, you can log in using your existing information.

Last year Rotary had the most walkers of any organization in our community and raised the most money.  Let’s do it again!  The Rotary Club of Nanaimo is matching donations up to $5000!

2. Daybreak Rotary is having a poker tournament at CavallottiLodge on February 4th – details on their website.

3. Reminder that Rotary is a Chamber of Commerce member – You can attend and represent Rotary.

4. There is another 5-Club Trash Pickup coming on April 22 for Earth Day.  More details to follow.

5. We are looking for more members to sit on the Area 40 committee.  It is a good opportunity to learn more about Rotary in Nanaimo and how we can accomplish more by working together.  See me for more details is interested.

6. Rotaract is active but needs guidance.  They meet every Tuesday at VIU in Building 250, Room 215.  If you can attend a meeting it would be appreciated by the members.  If you do attend, go a little early so you can answer any questions they might have about Rotary.

7. Door Committee

We are looking for another member of the door committee.  Currently the committee consists of Colin Heasley, John Pike and Larry. We are not always available and for coverage it would be good to have one more member to fill in.

8. Women Helping Women

Kerri Isham spoke to our club in July 2022 about the great work this organization does with women suffering violence.  If you shop at Country Grocer, one way we can help is by donating your receipts.  For every $1000 in receipts, Women Helping Women gets a $10 voucher from Country Grocer.  There will be a box each week on the door table.  Please support this organization if you can.

9. Loaves and Fishes

Next week is our volunteer turn at Loaves and Fishes.  If you are coming and have not registered, please do so ASAP.

10. Membership

Just a reminder to have Rotary as one of your New Year’s resolutions.  If you enjoy Rotary, don’t be selfish – share it!  Invite someone to the next meeting.

Sheila has a suitcase of school supplies to deliver to Project Amigo on January 28. Thanks to those who contributed items and cash.

Program:

The two guest speakers were John Boudreau and Kenn Hample, and talking about the “Nanaimo and District Men’s Shed”. This is an organization that was started in Australia but is now worldwide including being across Canada. British Columbia has 47 Men’s Sheds, with a number of them on Vancouver Island. It is a place for men to connect and have a sense of belonging, and it helps to avoid a feeling of isolation and loneliness. They have activities such as woodworking, and in some cases they help with community projects. It’s a place where men can spend free time, share meals, or just hang out. Check out the website:
