ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS (RYLA)
Each summer thousands of young people are selected to attend Rotary-sponsored leadership camps or seminars in numerous around the world. In an informal out-of-doors atmosphere, 50 to 75 outstanding young men and/or women spend a week in a challenging program of discussions, inspirational addresses, leadership training and social activities designed to enhance personal development, leadership skills and good citizenship. The official name of this activity is the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program (RYLA), although the event is occasionally referred to as Camp Royal, Camp Enterprise, Youth Leaders Seminars, Youth Conferences or other terms.
The RYLA program began in Australia in 1959, when young people throughout the state of Queensland were selected to meet with Princess Alexandra, the young cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. The Rotarians of Brisbane, who hosted the participants, were impressed with the quality of the young leaders, and it was decided to bring youth leaders together each year. In 1971, the RI Board of Directors adopted RYLA as an official program of Rotary International.
(The Nanaimo and Lantzville clubs support our local District 5020 Vancouver Island RYLA program and each club contributes to the costs.)
Report fom the Fundraising and Allocation Committee:
Meeting July 22
1] Beer and Burger
Jim will contact the Legion regarding the availability of the larger room for November 24 or 17 and the price per plate.
2] Fall garage sale
Ed contacted Deb Marshall regarding the availability of the old Slegg Lumber site in Lantzville for October 23/24. It is not available so I asked Moin, Ian and Cara regarding the availability of any empty commercial sites that would suit our needs of parking, visibility, and no rent. If this comes together Jim will contact Gerry at the Nanaimo Hospital Auxiliary thrift store regarding taking our unsold items and being able to deliver them to their store right after the sale.
3] Basketball tournament
Bob gave some ideas on this potential fund raiser. He will provide a report after he has made some contacts. The soonest this could happen would be March or April next year.
4] AI fundraising tools
Don has emailed us some documents regarding this item. Please let me know it you have any opinion or suggestions regarding this item to Jim.
5] Review of our fund allocation guidelines
Ed volunteered to provide an edited version which he has emailed to all of us this afternoon. If there are any other changes you would like to see please contact Ed.
6] Fund allocation. Partnering with the Nanaimo Hospital Auxiliary gift shop regarding setting up a food stand in front of their store at Northridge center. Jim will contact Gerry to discuss details. Request for funds from Dreams Take Flight does not fit with our guidelines.
7] Community involvement
The Committee received 2 request to provide volunteers for other charity fundraisers. The committee would prefer that such requests should be sent to the membership as it does not fit with the job description of the fund raising and allocation committee. Our secretary Perry will send such requests to the membership.

Membership
Sheila and Moin both spoke about the absolute need to find new members. Rob thinks that a new service project would help engage prospects and any new members should be given a role to play to keep them engaged. Everyone should be on an active committee. Sheila suggested that all speakers (or someone from their organization ) should be asked to join. Derek suggested that we wear our brand more often - t-shirts, hats etc. More public exposure. Bill suggested that a prospect be invited to an event - not a meeting. If you have any ideas - please forward them to Moin. Bottom line - keep asking people if they would like to join.
Internatinal Service
We are still involved with Paul's SeeCan project in Malawi and have some funds waiting.
Sheila updated us on Project Amigo Canada's application for charitable status - CRA has requested some minor rewording of the Constitution which has been done and submitted to the Alberta Registry. However it has a 3 - 4 month backlog. But it is looking hopeful!
Birthday: Fred was present to receive greetings from the club
Ending on a sad note. Past President Gill Campbell passed away on July 27 after several years of physical deterioration due to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Gill will be remebered for her great fundrasing ideas and her support of TRF.
